An amputee in the Philippines

Philippines

In 1997, Prosthetics Outreach Foundation assisted Our Lady of Victory Training Center on Mindanao Island in the Philippines. The Training Center is a unique surgical and rehabilitation facility that provides cares for abandoned children in need of surgery and rehabilitation care. We helped the Center design a new prosthetic clinic, provided prosthetic equipment and supplies, and trained local staff in automated production techniques.

Nicaragua

In 1996, we assisted Mercy Ships with the creation of a mobile prosthetic workshop. This workshop is housed in a 40-foot long standard shipping container. The unit was first deployed in Leon, Nicaragua.

The following year, we provided staff training on Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology and the fabrication of a prosthetic limb called the “Monolimb”. This artificial leg is made of only one piece of plastic, rather than multiple prosthetic components, which dramatically reduces the potential for breakdowns and costly repairs. Only two staff members were needed to produce more than 200 limbs.

Following the Hurricane Mitch disaster in October 1998, POF donated a shipment of prosthetic feet to the National Rehabilitation Center in Managua, Nicaragua.
