Prosthetic Services in Cap-Haïtien, Haiti

Prosthetics Workshop in Northern Haiti

the largest public hospital in Northern Haiti, to support the operations of a prosthetics and orthotics workshop at JUH’s Physical Rehabilitation Center. POF gathered and shipped essential equipment and supplies for the workshop, which was completed in fall 2011. The first amputee was cast in January 2012. With the opening of the workshop, amputees in northern Haiti have access to essential prosthetic and rehabilitation services, allowing them to live more independent lives and actively participate in their communities.

With the shortage of rehabilitation and prosthetic service providers in Haiti, POF’s goals include building sustainability through workforce development. POF has assisted with:

  • Selection of and funding for a professional prosthetist, who is providing services to amputees and skills training.
  • Sponsorship of two Haitian gentlemen enrolled in the University of Don Bosco prosthetic technologist training program, which requires a two and 1/2 year commitment. At the end of their training program, the prosthetic technologists will be able to provide services at the workshop.
  • Technical assistance to the prosthetist and management advice regarding mobile outreach, manufacturing, and skills training.
